Sourav Ganguly

One big name who is now widely considered a contender for the Delhi Capitals head coach position is Sourav Ganguly. Having served as a Director of Cricket to DC for many years, Ganguly may become the head coach of the franchise. Since he already understands the DC culture and has shown interest in being a head coach, he is clearly a front-runner for the post. Although no official confirmation has come yet, there were indications before Ricky Ponting was removed as DC coach.

I have to plan for next year’s IPL. I want to win the IPL for the Delhi Capitals once. The mega auction is next year, and hence I have started planning from now on. Geoffrey Boycott was right, as Ponting has not been able to take the franchise forward in the past 7 years. I have to speak with the franchise and ask them to look at Indian coaches. I will be the head coach. Let’s see how I perform.’ Ganguly told TOI

VVS Laxman

Apart from the top contender Sourav Ganguly, another name that could surprise is VVS Laxman. Laxman, who is currently the head coach of the Indian cricket team on tour in Zimbabwe for a 5-match T20I series, was the mentor of Sunrisers Hyderabad until 2021.

He is also heading the National Cricket Academy, a stint set to end in September 2024. Laxman joined the NCA as its chief in December 2021 for a three-year period, and after this stint, he may move to the Delhi Capitals.

Mahela Jayawardene

One more surprising name that may take charge is Sri Lankan former champion batter Mahela Jayawardene. Mahela stepped down as head coach of the Mumbai Indians in 2022. Jayawardene, who took charge of MI in 2017, led the team to two titles, making him the most successful MI coach. With his vast experience as a coach in the IPL and international cricket. He has also served as a consultant coach for Sri Lanka. Mahela Jayawardene could potentially take charge and turn things around for DC.
