3 big names RCB could release ahead of IPL 2025

As IPL teams are deciding whom to retain and whom to release, RCB is desperately searching for the right combination to secure the trophy. So, who will they retain and who will they wave off?

RCB is a team with a number of star players, a team that often gives contrasting results to their reputation, a team that is always a participant but never a winner. RCB had a dramatic IPL 2024, losing the first six games convincingly but coming back strongly in the second half of the season. Their performances helped them reach the IPL playoffs, but ultimately they lost the eliminator to the Rajasthan Royals.

With this, there are a few players from the team who may not see this jersey again. The on-and-off performances in every IPL season do not align with this franchise’s history of acquiring world-class players, from Virat Kohli to Chris Gayle and AB de Villiers in the past. Each season, they have had players who have single-handedly mesmerized the crowd.

However, as mentioned earlier, unfortunately, all the players did not hold the team together until the end of the IPL, resulting in losses in crucial games. In this scenario, the team may drop a few big players and try a new approach. So, who could be the ones who may not play for RCB in IPL 2025? Have a look.

Players RCB could release ahead of IPL 2025

Glenn Maxwell

10 matches, 52 runs at a poor average of 5.77, including five ducks. All these stats did not align with Glenn Maxwell’s stature as a batter. RCB had high expectations from him in IPL 2024, especially in big matches, but he did not deliver. It is also worth noting that he has been inconsistent in the squad, not only this season but in the last couple of seasons for RCB. While he has produced some magical innings, they have come in few chips.

There is no question that it was the worst season for this Australian superstar. Since RCB is desperately looking for an IPL trophy, they may not continue with him next season and instead try new talent to achieve success. Also, with Maxwell being 35 years old, he may not be part of RCB’s future plans.

The mega auction could be the best opportunity for RCB to release him and bring in fresh talent. Although no final conclusion has been reached, there is certainly no doubt about the caliber of this Australian great. However, given the current scenario, he may be excluded from the squad next season.

Faf Du Plessis

When RCB entered the IPL 2022 mega-auction after learning that Virat Kohli would not be continuing as RCB captain, they roped Faf du Plessis for Rs 7 crore. RCB did make it to the playoffs in IPL 2022 under him but did not end up winning the trophy. Similarly, in 2024, despite coming close to the IPL trophy, they fell short.

Some reports suggest that Faf was contracted for three years with RCB, so if this is accurate, RCB may choose not to retain him in the upcoming mega auction. Also, the age factor could play a crucial role, as Faf, currently 40 years old, is certainly not part of the future plans for RCB and might step away from his duties.

Cameron Green

Another Australian player who may not be retained by the RCB camp is Cameron Green. Green, who arrived from Mumbai Indians after an impressive 2023, did not live up to expectations in IPL 2024.

Despite the high hopes, he struggled to convert his potential into strong performances for RCB. In 13 games, he scored 255 runs, though his position as a middle-order batters limited his opportunities to contribute more. His inconsistency and failure in crucial matches are significant concerns for RCB in IPL 2025 if he gets retain.

Also, his bowling was under scrutiny. In those same 13 games, he conceded 303 runs at an economy rate of 8.62. Consistency has been an issue for this all-rounder, and this might be a key reason why he may not be retained for the next season.
