2014 champions Sri Lanka become first big nation to get eliminated from T20 World Cup 2024

Sri Lanka only have themselves to blame as they lost two tight games against both South Africa and Bangladesh to kickstart their T20 World Cup 2024 campaign.

The Sri Lankan team, despite boasting a squad brimming with talent, have been officially eliminated from the T20 World Cup 2024. Their fate was more or less sealed after their crucial match against Nepal in Florida was abandoned due to rain on June 11.

A campaign to forget for Sri Lanka

Sri Lanka’s campaign started on a disastrous note, slumping to a heavy defeat against South Africa in their opening encounter. Their struggles continued as they narrowly fell short against Bangladesh in their second match.

With their backs against the wall, Sri Lanka desperately needed a win against Nepal to stay alive in the tournament. However, the Florida weather conspired against them, washing out the match entirely. Their only hope hinged on the Bangladesh vs Netherlands match also being abandoned. With that match reaching a conclusion soon, the dream run for Wanindu Hasaranga’s men has officially come to an end.

This early exit comes as a massive disappointment for Sri Lankan fans, who had high expectations for their team. The squad possessed a potent attack on the helpful USA and Caribbean conditions. However, they were unable to translate that potential into results on the field. With this, Sri Lanka have joined the likes of Namibia and Oman to get knocked out.
