19 years ago: When Sachin Tendulkar drew level with his batting hero

On this day, Sachin Tendulkar clinched two major records in cricket

This day has prominent significance in Sachin Tendulkar’s Test career. This would be the luckiest day for the Little Master as he accomplished two major milestones today. In 1988, Sachin Tendulkar became the youngest Indian first-class centurion to announce his greatness. And 16 years later, he equaled the then record with his idol Sunil Gavaskar of 34 Test Hundred, most by an Indian batter.

Gavaskar’s record of 34 Test hundred was considered to be an imperishable milestone, no one had ever thought at that time that anyone could even come close to the record.

In a memorable cricket encounter against Bangladesh in 2004, the legendary Tendulkar exhibited his unparalleled prowess by crafting an unbeaten innings of 159 in Dhaka. This particular century not only showcased Tendulkar’s sublime batting skills but also marked a significant milestone in his illustrious career, as it allowed him to draw level with his cricketing idol, Sunil Gavaskar. Tendulkar went on to score a mammoth 248 runs.

India won by an innings and 140 runs against Bangladesh

With the help of Irfan Pathan’s excellent bowling spell of 5/45, India restricted Bangladesh to 184 in the first innings. In response, India put a total of 526 runs where Sachin Tendulkar scored 248 runs.

Irfan Pathan again did his magic and took six wickets to power India to a massive 140 runs and an innings win.

Sachin became the youngest Indian centurion in first-class
