India Squad WTC Final: The BCCI Selection Committee led by Shiv Sunder Das will meet in April to pick India’s squad for the upcoming World Test Championship Final. Rohit Sharma‘s side qualified after New Zealand beat Sri Lanka in the 1st Test. For India, they beat Australia 2-1 in the recently concluded Border Gavaskar Trophy. While there is still time for the match, Shreyas Iyer‘s participation seems unlikely with the NCA yet to give a timeline on the star batter’s return. Shreyas Iyer did not bat in the 4th Test against Austalia and was ruled out of the ODI series. The BCCI nor the NCA have issued a timeline for his return. As things stand, the KKR captain is likely to miss the first half of the IPL. He could miss up to 3 months should surgery be considered, ruling him out of the WTC Final.

“We have time but it looks difficult for Shreyas. If he is available, he will definitely be in the squad. But we have to wait and see how it turns out,” a senior BCCI official told InsideSport.

BCCI to monitor fitness during IPL 2023

Team India has been hit with an injury crisis with the World Test Championship Final and 2023 ODI World Cup looming on the horizon. Jasprit Bumrah and Prasidh Krishna have both undergone surgeries, while Shreyas Iyer is also facing a lengthy time out on the sidelines.

With the IPL 2023 coming, the BCCI are keen to ensure that there are no more casualties for Rohit Sharma and Co. The Indian cricket board and the NCA will monitor player fitness during the tournament before deciding on the WTC Final squad. The touring party will be announced next month. The deadline to submit the team is May 22.

“We have time for the squads. The last date to submit the squad is May 7 with changes, we can submit the final squad by May 22. The selectors will keep a tab on the players during IPL and their fitness levels and take a call accordingly,” a senior BCCI official told Insidesport.IN

India Squad WTC Final: Shreyas Iyer doubtful, KL Rahul to feature

  • Team India will announce their WTC Final squad next month.
  • The BCCI and NCA will monitor player fitness during the IPL before selecting the squad.
  • Shreyas Iyer is doubtful, with no clear timeline on his return from injury.
  • KL Rahul, sacked as vice-captain, set to retain his spot in the squad.

Shreyas Iyer’s injury has opened the door for KL Rahul to retain his place in the side. Rahul featured in the first two Tests of the Border Gavaskar Trophy. His poor run of form saw him make way for Shubman Gill, who sealed his spot with a fine century.

The sacked deputy however could take up a middle-order spot on his return. Rahul was considered for a middle-order berth when India toured England in 2021. However, a combination of injuries and protocols saw him return to the top, where he scored a century at Lord’s. He could also take up wicket-keeping, which he is set to do in the India vs Australia series.
