Tilak Varma bailed out Mumbai Indians to kick off his IPL 2023 season in style with a stunning show at the Chinnaswamy Stadium. Coming in to bat after MI lost their top order cheaply, Tilak showed his intent to get off the mark with a  maximum. He then built a timely partnership with Suryakumar Yadav and Nehal Wadhera to keep the scoreboard ticking.

Highest individual scores for MI from No.5 or below:

  • 91 (34) – Hardik Pandya vs KKR, Kolkata, 2019
  • 87*(34) – Kieron Pollard vs CSK, Delhi, 2021
  • 84* (46) – Tilak Verma vs RCB, Bangalore, today

Even as wickets continued to tumble, the Hyderabad-based star kept the runs flowing from his blade. Faf du Plessis threw all his cards at the young left-hander, but he bested one and all that came his way. Tilak eventually reached his half-century in just 32 balls.

The 20-year-old took total toll at the death to power MI to 171/7 in their innings. Tilak remained unbeaten 84 off just 46 balls, scoring almost 50% of his team’s runs. It is also the second-best score by a Mumbai Indians batter batting at No.5 or below.
