India captain Rohit Sharma hinted that team India pacers will hone their red ball skills over the next couple of months during the IPL 2023. Having clinched a 2-1 Test series win, India now plays 3 ODIs before heading to the IPL. The WTC Final is only a week after the tournament, leaving almost no time for a training camp in England.
Given the tight schedules, Rohit revealed that the team management & BCCI have hatched a special plan to keep the bowlers ready for the summit clash. The likes of Mohammed Shami, Mohammed Siraj, Shardul Thakur, and Umesh Yadav will be given Dukes Ball, the one used in England, to practice during the IPL.
Speaking after the IND vs AUS 4th Test, Rohit Sharma said, “We will monitor the workload and bowlers will be given duke balls during IPL for practice ahead of WTC final. By May 21st, 6 teams Will be out of IPL so we will try to get those players early to UK.”

In England, Tests are played with Duke balls unlike SG Tests in India and the Kookaburra in Australia. How much time a Shami, Umesh or Siraj can find out from their travelling, matches and busy schedule is there to be seen. But England isn’t an alien place for most of the Test squad members as they have all played multiple series there and some of them have also played county cricket.
“Guys, who will be part of finals are not the guys who have not played in UK. May be there could be one or two guys here and there and rest all of us have played in that part of the world. I don’t think it will be huge problem. Look, I believe that preparations will be key for us, come the finals,” Rohit added.

As reported earlier by Insidesport, Rohit Sharma & Co will have a short preparatory camp before the ICC World Test Championship Final immediately after IPL 2023 Final. India Cricket Team will leave for London on June 1 three days after the IPL Final on May 28. After a short camp in London, India will move to the official venue – Kennington Oval – to continue with the preparations.
As India are unlikely to emulate English conditions in India during May-June, India will head to London to get acclimatised to the conditions as well as prepare under Rahul Dravid.
NCA will work closely with the IPL franchises on workload with World Cup 2023 in mind. A special set of instructions on injury management and overs bowled will go for WTC Final. Ravindra Jadeja, Shardul Thakur, Mohammad Shami and Mohammed Siraj will get special attention while playing in Indian Premier League.
