Shreyas Iyer Injury: The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is not taking any chances with Shreyas Iyer. The Indian batter will undergo surgery for his back injury in England next week. Iyer suffered a relapse of his lower back injury after returning for the Test series against Australia. With World Cup 2023 in October, BCCI wants him to make a swift recovery. But the surgery will rule him out for close to 4-5 months. Hence, he is set to miss the Asia Cup 2023 in September. Follow IPL 2023 LIVE Updates on InsideSport.IN.
“Shreyas Iyer is scheduled to undergo surgery for his lower back issue next week. He will remain under the surgeon’s care for two weeks and will return to the NCA after that for rehabilitation,” BCCI said in a statement on Saturday.
Series/Tournaments Shreyas Iyer to miss:

Shreyas Iyer Injury: What do we know so far?
- He has a bulging disc in his back with surgery scheduled for next week.
- A surgery would rule him out for 4-5 months, risking his participation in ODI World Cup.
- He is certain to miss WTC Final and also Asia Cup 2023.
- The BCCI and NCA are kept in the loop regarding the same.
- He started ayurvedic treatment for his back but it did not help.
However, one would wonder if NCA was at fault for this situation. He was rushed back for the Test series against Australia after missing the series against New Zealand.
However, instead of taking the route of conventional medicine, Shreyas Iyer sought alternate medicine. NCA sports science head Nitin Patel helped with acupressure treatment before clearing him to join the team for Australia Test series. But it did not take long for him to break down again.
Iyer could not bat in the 4th Test as he was ruled out of the ODI series as well. While he avoided surgery for a while, BCCI advised him to see a specialist in Mumbai. After consultation, he was ruled out of the IPL 2023. He will now fly to London for surgery, rulling him out for longer than expected.
