Kohli vs Ganguly: What is it all about?

The two former India captains don’t see eye to eye. While they enjoyed a good rapport and Ganguly has never said anything against Kohli in public, the RCB superstar felt wronged by him when Dada was BCCI President.

Kohli assumed that it was Ganguly who forced him out of ODI captaincy after he stepped down from T20 captaincy. Soon, Kohli quit Test captaincy as well to focus on his batting. But it all started when Ganguly told media that he personally asked Kohli not to quit T20 captaincy and Kohli refuted the claims.

Virat Kohli and Sourav Ganguly enjoyed a good rapport before the fallout last year

Kohli, in a press conference before South Africa tour in 2021-22, indirectly called Ganguly a liar, saying he did not receive any call from anyone. He went on to add that he was informed about the captaincy change 90 minutes before team selection meeting.

But long before that, the rift was open when Kohli had a fallout with former India coach Anil Kumble. As the Cricket Advisory Committee of which Ganguly was a member, picked Kumble as the coach, it did not sit well with Prince of Kolkata. Even though he never made it public, inside BCCI’s power corridors, things were definitely not okay.

Former chairman of the selection committee Chetan Sharma called it an ego tussle.

“When the player becomes popular, he considers himself to be bigger than the board and thinks that nobody can touch him. He feels that cricket in India would stop without him. Kohli tried to hit back at the president at that time. It was a damaging controversy. It was a classic case of a player going against the BCCI. The president represents the BCCI, isn’t it? As to whose fault it was, that will be judged in time. But it was an attack on the BCCI. There has to be some respect for the chair,” Chetan Sharma said in a sting operation by Zee News.
