As per an Indian Express Report, Rohit Sharma could opt to sit out of IPL games in part to manage his workload ahead of a packed international calendar. Rohit who has had his troubles with injuries in the recent past, will pick and choose games to feature throughout the tournament. He will continue to travel with the team at all times but might not feature. Instead, he could pass on instructions to Suryakumar Yadav who will be leading in his absence.

Rohit Sharma missed India’s last trip to England due to injury with Jasprit Bumrah leading in his absence. He also missed the tours of South Africa and Bangladesh over the last 18 months. With the WTC Final just 10 days after the IPL, Rohit is taking no risks as far as his fitness is concerned. The 2023 ODI World Cup has also been factored into his decision.

No Kieron Pollard, Suryakumar Yadav elevated to ‘captaincy’

Rohit had missed a few games in IPL 2020, with Kieron Pollard leading the side. With the West Indian now retired and a batting coach, the mantle has fallen up to Suryakumar Yadav. Yadav has previously led the Mumbai Ranji team and is considered part of the T20I leadership set-up.

It is a nice elevation for Surya who has emerged as the World No.1 batter in T20Is. He has been uber-consistent for Mumbai Indians, scoring more than 300 runs in each of his 5 seasons with the franchise. In just 8 games last year, SKY scored 303 at an average of 43.29 and a strike rate of 145.67.

Rohit Sharma understands players will find it difficult to rest during the IPL. The Hit-Man himself had a 3-day break after the Australia series before resuming for the Mumbai Indians. Before the tournament, he had urged the players to manage their workload and hoped that there weren’t any more casualties.

“It’s all up to the franchises now. They own them now. We have given some indications to the teams, but at the end of the day, it’s up to the franchises. And more importantly, it’s up to the players. They are all adults; they have to look after their bodies. If they feel it’s getting a bit too much, they can talk about it and take a break in one or two games. I doubt if that will happen,” Rohit had said after the 3rd ODI in Chennai.

India have already lost Jasprit Bumrah and Prasidh Krishna to long-term injuries. Rishabh Pant’s accident has ruled him out while there still remain doubts about Shreyas Iyer’s fitness. India will name their WTC Final squad in May having monitored the fitness of their stars during the IPL 2023.
