Shreyas Iyer Injury Update: Despite a troublesome back, Shreyas Iyer is set to go against BCCI and NCA advice and opt against surgery. The 28-year-old has a recurring back issue which ruled him out of the 4th Test and the ODI series against Australia. It will likely keep him out of the first half of IPL 2023, where he captains the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR). It is believed surgery would rule him out for more than 7 months and the Mumbai star is unwilling to risk the timeline with the 2023 ODI World Cup on the horizon. As per Cricbuzz, Shreyas Iyer has rejected NCA’s suggestion of undergoing surgery to fix his back. Iyer has a bulging disc in his spine which also causes pain in his right calf. It has rendered him impossible to walk without shooting pain. He was given six injections to numb the pain in the recent past but continues to deny surgery.
It is believed that surgery would rule him for at least six months. There remains no guarantee he could return to action before October-November when the World Cup will be held in India. As a result, he has opted to take a ‘wait and see’ approach to the injury. The BCCI and NCA are subsequently kept in the loop.

He is not conclusively ruled out of the IPL, but will certainly miss the first half of the season. As per a specialist’s advice, the KKR captain is waiting for the pain to subside. During his rehab before the Australia series, Shreyas was seen getting acupuncture treatment. In an Instagram story, Iyer is seen getting his injury treated with the help of a pin.
Also, Kolkata Knight Riders are preparing for the worst. KKR are looking for options in captaincy as well as a replacement if Iyer doesn’t make it for IPL. As per a Cricbuzz report, Sunil Narine is not being considered for captaincy. Narine had a woeful stint as the captain of Abu Dhabi Knight Riders in ILT20, winning just one match out of 10. Nitish Rana and Tim Southee are among other available options.
