Cricket in LA 2028 Olympics! All eyes on IOC session in Mumbai now

If cricket is included in the summer Olympics, its media rights income may triple. With Brisbane likely to host the 2032 Olympics and India putting in a bid for the 2036 Olympics, cricket's cause is strengthened.

Cricket in LA 2028 Olympics! Will cricket eventually be included in the 2028 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles? The 141st International Olympic Committee (IOC) Session, which will be held in Mumbai from October 15 to October 17 with the opening ceremony taking place on October 14 at the Jio World Centre (JWC), will reveal the answer to this million-dollar question.

According to a statement on the IOC website, the IOC Executive Board (EB) will meet on October 12, 13, and 14 before the IOC session.

“If cricket is ‘in’ for the 2028 Games, a ceremonial announcement in this regard will be made at this IOC Session in Mumbai. Cricket’s fate will be decided by then, but the decision will be ratified at this meeting,” a source tracking the developments told TOI.

LA 2028 Olympics: ICC suggest six-team event

The IOC will receive proposals from the LA organising committee a month before this meeting. The ICC has suggested a six-team competition for men and women, with three hours of T20 cricket as the chosen format, since the IOC wishes to cap the number of participating athletes at 10,500.

There has been speculation over cricket’s eagerly anticipated return to the Olympics after 128 years since it was last played at the Paris Games in 1900 with just England and France participating. In the subcontinent, the sport is viewed by billions of people, making it a very appealing choice for the IOC to put it in the Olympic schedule.

The BCCI is supporting the ICC’s effort to get cricket into the Olympics, and Board Secretary Jay Shah is a part of the ICC’s Olympics working group, which is of utmost importance.

Up until last year, it was anticipated that cricket would not make it to the Olympics in Los Angeles in 1928 and that Brisbane Olympics 2032 would be more likely.

However, Jay Shah, the BCCI secretary, was added to the ICC’s Olympic working group as the Indian cricket body started to endorse the idea.
