The International Cricket Council (ICC) has finally served the expected verdict on India women’s cricket team captain Harmanpreet Kaur. She has been suspended for two matches following ICC code of conduct breach in IND vs BAN 3rd ODI on Saturday. With that India will miss Harmanpreet in the quarterfinal and semifinal clashes in Asian Games 2023. Smriti Mandhana will take charge of the team.

While reports emerged from Dhaka that Harmanpreet Kaur will get four demerit points, ICC has taken 48 hours more to announce the verdict. She has been 50 per cent of her match fee and three demerit points for a Level 2 offence.

What happened with Harmapreet Kaur?

The India captain was furious with the umpire on her dismissal. She kicked the stumps on his way back to the pavillion during the 3rd ODI against Bangladesh.

Hence, she was found guilty of breaching article 2.8 of the ICC Code of Conduct for Players and Player Support Personnel for “showing dissent at an umpire’s decision”.

However, it did not end there. During the presenattion ceremony, she lashed out at the umpires. Furthermore, as the match ended in a tie, during the trophy presentation, she shouted at Bangladeshi players, saying, “Why you are only here? You haven’t tied the match. The umpires did it for you. Call them up! We better have photo with them as well.”

Harmanpreet Kaur was also fined 25 per cent of her match fee for a Level 1 offence after she was found guilty of breaching article 2.7, which relates to “public criticism in relation to an incident occurring in an international match.”

Kaur admitted the offences and accepted the sanctions proposed by Akhtar Ahmed of the Emirates ICC International Panel of Match Referees and, as such, there was no need for a formal hearing.

ICC Code of Conduct Breach offence:

  • Four or more demerit points within a 24-month period leads to suspension points. The player then recieves a suspension.
  • Two suspension points equate to a ban from one Test or two ODIs or two T20Is, whatever comes first for the player
  • Demerit Points will remain on a Player or Player Support Personnel’s disciplinary record for a period of 24 months.

On-field umpires Tanvir Ahmed and Muhammad Kamruzzaman, third umpire Moniruzzamman and fourth umpire Ali Arman leveled the charges.

As India’s next assignment is Asian Games 2023, she will have to serve the suspension there.
