Thanks to their thorough win, the Super Kings are now in second place in the standings with 13 points, just one behind Gujarat Giants (14 points), who are currently in first. As skipper Dhoni chose to bowl first after winning the toss, his bowlers scarcely made a mistake in holding the opposition to a modest 139/8. With 14 balls left, the Super Kings were able to surpass the Mumbai total thanks to their top order, which is currently in excellent form.

Speaking of the CSK bowlers, Sri Lankan fast Matheesha Pathirana (3/15) once again shone and finished with the best numbers, earning him the Man-of-the-Match award as well. Deepak Chahar and Tushar Deshpande also did well in bringing Mumbai to 14/3 in the third over.

The five-time IPL champions, inserted skipper Rohit Sharma at No. 3, while all-rounder Cameron Green was promoted to open with Ishan Kishan. The strategy failed as Deshpande (2/26), for once, got his length right and got rid of the Australian in the second over of the match.

Despite the strain, Nehal Wadhera stayed strong and displayed the required calm. Tristan Stubbs, who took Tilak Varma’s position as his partner at the other end, didn’t appear to be at ease at first. However, as Mumbai looked for a better result, the pair put up 54 for the fifth wicket.

Pathirana gained control at that point. He initially struck Wadhera with a yorker before striking twice in the final over of Mumbai’s innings to get rid of Arshad Khan and Stubbs. Pathirana displayed his control and discipline by not allowing a single boundary or maximum.

In response, CSK’s work was made easier by openers Devon Conway (44) and Ruturaj Gaikwad (30), who combined for 46 runs off the first four overs. Again, only the spinner Piyush Chawla (2/25) could really make an impression for Mumbai.
