Cricket Business : Sri Lanka Cricket offers only 6 months contract to the national women team

In a surprising move, the Sri Lanka Cricket board (SLC) has decided to offer only 6 month contracts  contracts to its women cricketers. The SLC handed over contracts on Tuesday to 20 national women cricketers along with 15 emerging women players for just six months. SLC also refused to divulge the commercial values of the contracts given to the women cricketers.

The national players were handed contracts under four categories – A, B, C and D, while the emerging cricketers were offered a fixed monthly rate and an attendance allowance.

All the contracted players were nominated by the National Women’s Selection Committee, on the basis of their performances and availability. With senior player Shashikala Siriwardene recently retired, only skipper Chamari Athapaththu has been named in the A category.

Group A – Chamari Athapaththu
Group B – Anushka Sanjeewani, Oshadi Ranasinghe, Inoka Ranaweera, Nilakshi De Silva, Sugandika Kumari, Udeshika Prabodhani, Hasini Perera, Harshitha Madavi
Group C – Dilani Manodara, Prasadini Weerakkody, Kavisha Dilhari
Group D – Ama Kanchana, Imalka Mendis, Inoshi Fernando, Achini Kulasooriya, Hansima Karunaratne, Madushika Meththananda, Umesha Thimashini, Sathya Sandeepani
Sri Lanka’s Contracted Emerging Women’s Players
Malsha Shehani, Lihini Apsara, Tharika Sewwandi, Jimanjalee Wijenayake, Harshani Wijeratne, Shashikala Silva, Sachini Nisansala, Iresha Sandamalee, Tharuka Shehani, Nilkashana Sandmini, Rose Perera, Janadi Analee, Shikari Niwarthana, Thilishiya Sathsarani, Saduni Nisansala
In Indian cricket, the Indian women cricket team is also on the central contracts like their male counterparts and are being paid handsomely. The top Indian women in the Grade A are contracted of 50 Lac per annum. In comparison the contracts handed over by to its national women cricketers are of substantially lesser values.

The BCCI latest contracts run from October 2019 to September 2020.

Grade A (Rs 50 lakh): Harmanpreet Kaur, Smriti Mandhana, Poonam Yadav.

Grade B (Rs 30 lakh): Mithali Raj, Jhulan Goswami, Ekta Bisht, Radha Yadav, Taniya Bhatia, Shikha Pandey, Jemimah Rodrigues, Deepti Sharma.
Grade C (Rs 10 lakh): Veda Krishnamurthy, Punam Raut, Anuja Patil, Mansi Joshi, D Hemlatha, Arundhati Reddy, Rajeshwari Gayakwad, Pooja Vastrakar, Harleen Deol, Priya Punia, Shafali Verma.
