“For the first time the ICC decided to sell the rights territory-wise. In that, the Indian market alone fetched $3.04 billion. By ICC’s own “75% theory”, this $3.04 billion should be 75% of all their global revenues right? But do you think the rest of the world, collectively, is contributing 25%?” News18 quoted sources.

In 2017, BCCI was dealt a big blow by then ICC President Shashank Manohar, who proposed a revenue cut. As per that plan, BCCI would have earned around $290 million. It was a massive cut from $579 million. However, after BCCI’s protest, ICC had to step back.

Now that BCCI Secretary Jay Shah is the head of the financial committee, BCCI is set to benefit. From 22.8%, the share will increase to 37%. During the last cycle (2016-23), BCCI bagged 405 million USD. While ICC sources earlier believed Indian cricket contributed 75%, the latest media rights sale shows the Indian market alone contributes almost 90%.

  • Jay Shah led Finance & Commercial Affairs Committee and is working towards India’s share to 37%.

“That means the Indian market alone is contributing 88 to 90% of ICC’s revenues. You go asking around in the industry and those who run the finances of the game will tell you — there was never any Big 3. There’s always been only Big 1. The rest of the world, all put together, is not bringing even US$500m to the table”, sources told News18.

Disney Star clinched both digital and TV rights for the upcoming 2024-27 cycle. They later signed a licensing agreement with Zee, allowing them to broadcast ICC men’s and U-19 events falling in the upcoming cycle. BCCI is expected to Rs 10,000 crore from ICC’s revenue share for the next cycle.

BCCI Tax Exemption Issue

Insidesport

While ICC and BCCI are at crossroads as far as tax exemption for the upcoming World Cup is concerned, BCCI is expected to ask ICC to deduct Rs 955 crore from its revenue. The BCCI lost close to Rs 193 crore as the tax exemption during the 2016 T20 World Cup and is fighting its case in an ICC tribunal. The Indian cricket board is likely to inform the ICC about its stand soon.

“How can the government be asked to bend its rules? Even in 2016, during the T20 World Cup in India, a similar request was turned down by the Indian government so there was no point going that way again,” added the source.
