IPL: Indian Premier League, the most popular offering from the Board for Control of Cricket in India (BCCI), is currently in its 16th season and continues to expand rapidly. In a country where cricket stars are revered as celebrities and cult figures, the IPL is made even crazier by the electrified crowd. In an interview, IPL chairman Arun Singh Dhumal said that the second part of the year might witness a ‘mini IPL’ or scaled-down version of the tournament. “We will see. Given the format of the IPL that we have, it is not possible to have another edition in the same year. We have seen the bilateral calendar for the upcoming four years and the ICC events. So that may not be possible. But if there is any window of opportunity available for some other format or short tournament, we are definitely looking at that,” Arun Dhumal said in an interview with The Indian Express.
IPL is now the second most expensive sporting league in the world in terms of the value of a single match after media rights for the 2023–2027 cycle brought in an astounding Rs 48,390 crore.
The IPL will have a two and a half month exclusive window with a maximum of 94 games with 10 teams, while having a significantly shorter window than American football leagues like the National Football League (NFL) or the English Premier League (EPL). The IPL is also the most watched sports league in the world among non-football and NBA leagues.
