Chess Olympiad 2022: Tamil Nadu has earmarked a sum of Rs 92.13 crores for the Chess Olympiad 2022, which starts from July 28 in Chennai. It is for the first time India has been awarded the hosting rights, which was originally with Russia. With Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, the former were robbed of the rights and India acted swiftly to get the world’s biggest chess event to India by mid-March. The Tamil Nadu government have pumped in big money to make the world event a roaring success.

“To host this event, the state government has set aside Rs. 92.13 crores,” Stalin was quoted as saying in Sportstar.
“Hosting the 44th Chess Olympiad is a matter of pride for the State of Tamil Nadu. More than 200 countries and 1000 players will participate for the first time in Chennai. Because of the war in Ukraine, FIDE decided to drop Russia, which was going to host it.”
“A lot of countries worked hard to host the tournament. With AICF, we decided to bring it to India. Our government was able to take quick decisions and did all the necessary work expeditiously and we got it hosting rights.”

Chennai, which is also regarded as the chess capital of India, got the nod ahead of Gujarat and Delhi. India will be looking for a medal with home advantage on their side. With China skipping the Olympiad, India’s chances have further brightened. China finished with gold in 2014 and 2018.
