Eight is a lot, even for a manager of Potter’s calibre who is well known for making a lot of changes week to week. Rigorous adjustments are to be expected given that their previous match was six weeks ago. The main attraction is James’ comeback, but there are also appearances from Kepa Arrizabalaga, Thiago Silva, Marc Cucurella, Denis Zakaria, Raheem Sterling, Christian Pulisic, and Kai Havertz.
Last week, Bournemouth travelled to Newcastle to play in the League Cup. This week, they make three changes to their lineup, replacing Chris Mepham, Ryan Christie, and Jaidon Anthony with Lloyd Kelly, Jack Stacey, and Jefferson Lerma.

Chelsea quickly scored their first Premier League goal since October as they took control of the game right away. Raheem Sterling was given space on the right wing by Mount’s incisive pass after 16 minutes. He perfectly placed a low ball for Havertz, who scored while Mark Travers was rushing.

Momentarily, Bournemouth responded strongly, but it didn’t take long for Chelsea to retake control, and eight minutes later, Mount extended their lead. When Mount was located beyond the area, Havertz took his time to locate him. Mount then caressed an incredible right-footed attempt into the near post. Shortly before halftime, the hosts forced Bournemouth goalkeeper Travers into action, Reece James and Sterling challenging his quickness.
James was able to walk off the pitch but was forced off at Stamford Bridge after 52 minutes with another injury. James had been out of the England World Cup squad due to a knee injury, but he had returned to the Chelsea lineup. Particularly Mount kept causing issues for Bournemouth. After a strong solo run midway through the second half, he forced Travers into a brilliant save.

The greatest opportunity for Bournemouth came 11 minutes from time. It was a dismal night for Gary O’Neil’s team, despite their improved second half performance, as Ryan Christie could only fire into Kepa’s knees from an acute angle after Denis Zakaria’s ball was cut out in midfield, allowing the visitors to break forward in numbers. Chelsea moves up to ninth in the Premier League thanks to the win. In 16th place and three points above the relegation zone is Bournemouth.
