A bidding process was started where many renowned businessmen expressed interest in buying the West London-based club. A consortium of Swiss billionaire Hansjorg Wyss and American businessman Todd Boehly was even selected as Chelsea’s new owners, and the official paperwork was all set to begin very soon.
However, all of that has taken a step back now, with Abramovich demanding £1.6 billion from the club. The oligarch had injected this money into the club from his own pockets, and he now wants to club to repay this amount through a Jersey-based company called Camberley International Investments. According to reports in The Times, while the exact ownership structure of the entity is not known, it seemingly has links to Abramovich and his family members.

This development has pushed Chelsea into the darkness of uncertainty, as the UK government has clearly said it will block the sale if any money goes to Abramovich. The government has also given Chelsea a deadline of May 31 to finalize the sale, after which the current license of the club will expire. However, if the Abramovich fiasco is not sorted by then, Chelsea could be expelled from the Premier League for not abiding by the guidelines.
