Novak Djokovic created Tennis history by winning a record 23rd Grand Slam title on Sunday, 11th June 2023. Soon after the 36-year old’s feat, his friend and rival Rafael was quick to congratulate the Serbian on his achievement. By winning his third French Open title, Djokovic leapfrogged Rafael Nadal in the list of players with Most Grand Slam wins.
Novak Djokovic defeated Casper Ruud in straight sets in the French Open 2023 final. Soon after the victory Rafael Nadal took to Twitter and posted, “Many congrats on this amazing achievement @DjokerNole 23 is a number that just a few years back was imposible to think about, and you made it! Enjoy it with your family and team!”
By surpassing Nadal’s tally of 22 Grand Slam wins, Djokovic went on to become the first man in the planet to win 23 Grand Slam trophies. The victory in Paris on Sunday is Djokovic’s third title at Roland Garros.
Rafael Nadal, who is a 14-time champion at Parisian clay missed out the tournament this year owing to a hip injury that he sustained earlier this year at the Australian Open. He has recently underwent a surgery on his hip flexor and is set to be out of action for another five months.
With two more Grand Slams remaining this year, Djokovic will now aim to end 2023 with 25 titles to his name. He is currently tied with Serena Williams, who also has 23 titles to her name. Only Margaret Court, with 24 titles is above Djokovic.
