Amid constant bashing by the top 8 players on the WTA tour due to poor scheduling, bad crowds, and an unfit court, WTA Chief Steve Simon has addressed the players in a lengthy letter. The players had written a letter to Simon a few days prior about the shambolic treatment they were receiving at the WTA Finals in Cancun. Every top player has so far criticised the WTA, with No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka going on to say that this is “another level of disrespect”.
Simon, in the letter, said, “It is clear that you are not happy with the decision to be here in Cancun. I understand that and you have been heard”.
“It is not a perfect event, we understand the conditions are a challenge and the WTA will of course accept responsibility for that”, the WTA Chief further added.

The WTA Finals is the marquee tournament of the women’s tour. The event includes the best eight players of the year, who go toe to toe with a chance to end the year as world no. 1. Cancun was selected as the new site for the WTA Finals in September, just one and a half months before the event. The site, which was originally a golf course, was then converted, with the construction being completed just a day before the event.
Players had written to Simon, expressing their concern over their health due to the poor courts, with reigning Wimbledon champ Marketa Vondrousova going on to say, “It should never happen again. I feel this is not Finals for us. The court is not even for a 15K (tournament)”
