Wrestlers Protest: The protesting wrestlers have made a return to the mats with the Asian Games fast approaching. Bajrang Punia, Geeta Phogat, Vinesh Phogat and others have all resumed training in the past month at SAI’s Sonepat centre. The Asian Games trials are likely to be held later this month, with the wrestlers having requested the Sports Ministry to move the dates to August.
The wrestlers returning to training is a sign of some normalcy as their protest continues for the arrest of Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh. As per reports, Vinesh Phogat visited Sport Authority of India’s (SAI) Sonepat centre as early as June 9. Sangeeta Phogat, Geeta Phogat, Bajrang Punia, and Pawan Saroha have all assembled at the venue.

“The protesting wrestlers have been away from the mat for a long time. Mostly they are spending time in gym. Sangeeta is also working on strength building,” said a SAI source told PTI.
The women wrestlers gathered for the National Camp at the SAI centre in Lucknow, but it was relocated due to an uproar against the WFI chief.
Wrestlers approached the Sports Ministry on Friday, urging that the trials be held in August because they will be unable to compete if the trials are held later this month.
The IOA, which has previously asked all national federations to submit their final squad lists by June 30, has approached the Olympic Council of Asia, asking whether the wrestling team can be submitted by August 10.
By July 15, the IOA must submit the names of all participating Indian players to the OCA.
