Antim Panghal not be banned for three years, IOA comes out with clarification after rumors galore

19-year-old Antim Panghal lost her debut match 0-10 to end her campaign in women's wrestling 53kg category.

As soon as Antim Panghal lost her women’s 53 kg bout at the Paris Olympics on Wednesday, all sorts of reports started surfacing, about her leaving the Games village, trying to sneak her sister in, on her accreditation, and then her brother beating up a taxi driver. There were also reports of Antim getting a three-year ban from the IOA.

But now as it turns out, the IOA has refuted these claims. They have come out with a clarification, requesting the media, not to indulge in rumour-mongering. But what is sure is, there was a displinary breach from the wrestlers’ side and hence she would be sent back home.

Following the Paris Olympics fiasco, IOA issued a statement saying she would be brought back to India on the next available flight.

“The Indian Olympic Association has decided to fly wrestler Antim and her support staff back after a disciplinary breach was brought to IOA’s notice by the French authorities,” the IOA said in a statement.

On her part, Antim Phangal issued a clarification in a video, claiming that her sister was not detained. Rather, she was taken to the police station for verification. Furthermore, there was an altercation with a taxi driver with her coach because of language barrier.

But as far as the alleged, upcoming ban on Antim is concerned, it still remains to be seen, if that happens at all. There are contrasting reports which suggest that the IOA is no mood to ban the talented wrestler, who is touted as one of the most talented in the world.
