Jiang Huihua (206 kg) and Hou Zhihui (198 kg), two Chinese weightlifters, finished on each side of her on the podium.

When Mirabai struggled with the overhead lift in her second attempt at a clean and jerk, her wrist injury became evident.

It was clear that Mirabai, who won her first gold medal at the National Games (191 kg) and her second gold medal at the Commonwealth Games (201 kg) earlier this year, was not pushing herself in the very competitive field.

Jiang Huihua, a double World champion from China, Hou Zhihui, an Olympic and World champion from China, two-time European bronze medalist Nina Sterckx from Belgium at 55 kg, Echandia Katherin from Venezuela at 45 kg, Mihaela Cambei from Romania, junior Pan-American champion Dahiana Oritz from the Dominican Republic, and Natasha Figueiredo from Brazil are all competitors in the women’s 49 kg weight class.

In this weight class, 11 lifters entered with weights of 200 kg or higher, which speaks to the calibre of the field.

Chanu has a personal best of 207kg (88kg+119kg). She achieved the 119 kg lift in clean & jerk at the Asian Championships in April 2021. However her 88 kg best in the snatch event is still 8 kgs below the snatch world record of 96 kg achieved by China’s Hou Zhihui . She has been trying to breach the 90kg mark in the snatch category since 2020. But since she struggles with a back issue and a wrist injury that affects her snatch and might not risk lifting 90kg at the marquee event.

The World Championships are the first qualification event for the Paris 2024 Olympics. According to India’s head coach Vijay Sharma as quoted by PTI, “For Mira, we will try to get 200+ total in every qualifying event so that we qualify for the Olympics. To regularly overload is not prudent. A 200kg + total weight will comfortably lead to qualification so we are not going to take much pressure in this event.”
