“Won’t blame anything, it’s just poor performance,” Tsitsipas after shock second round loss in US Open

Stefanos Tsitsipas blamed himself for his second round loss against Dominic Stricker in the US Open 2023.

US Open 2023: After suffering a shocking second round defeat in the US Open, Stefanos Tsitsipas took full ownership of the loss and blamed himself as his poor run continued. He lost in a five-set thtiller against Swiss qualifier Dominic Stricker on Wednesday. With the loss, failed to reach the second week of the US Open in his six career appearances in New York.

Stefanos Tsitsipas won the Los Cabos title earlier this month. However in the run-up to the US Open, he suffered first round exit at the Canadian Open and bowed out from the second round at the Canadian Open.

He began his US Open campaign with a straight set win against Milos Raonic. However against qualifier Dominic Stricker, he bowed out after losing 7-5 6-7(2) 6-7(5) 7-6(6) 6-3.

“I won’t blame it on anything. It’s just poor performance after Los Cabos,” he said. “I consider myself a good player, and I don’t want to be a person that can be beaten easily or I’m giving my opponents easy time on the court against me. Will try to make it as hard as I can, and if it doesn’t work, it doesn’t work. I move on with my life.”

“Coach change not to be blamed”

He removed his father, Apostolos Tsitsipas, as head coach earlier this month. Hhe however said that shake-ups to his team were not to blame. “By no means I’m supposed to put any blame on any people or any members of my team.”

“Everything on court is under my control and under my talents, and the way I can play this sport are shown out on the court. If I’m not able to deliver, then I’m not supposed to be doing well.”

His defeat marks the latest Greek disappointment in Flushing Meadows. Earlier, eighth seed Maria Sakkari lost in straight sets in the opening round of the women’s draw on Monday.
