Novak Djokovic continued on his seemingly relentless progress to a seventh Wimbledon final with his fourth successive straight-sets victory, this time over the unseeded Hungarian Marton Fucsovics. While not as easy as it appeared when the defending champion won the opening five games, the Serb was never seriously threatened by the world No.48.
Djokovic has now won 15 sets on the spin after losing his first of The Championships, to wild card Jack Draper. However, Fuscovics was only the second player he has faced in the top 100, the other being Cristian Garin, the world No.20. In the semi-final he now meets either Karen Khachanov, the world No.29, or Denis Shapovalov, the world No.12
Fucsovics was not only making his Centre Court debut, he was playing in his first Grand Slam quarter-final. Djokovic was playing in his 50th. The underdog nevertheless won the first point, receiving, and the third, but Djokovic held serve then set about dismantling his nervy opponent’s game.
Just 22 minutes had elapsed before Fucsovics found himself 0-5 down and facing two set points. To the surprise and delight of the crowd, who wanted a contest, and no doubt his own relief, Fucsovics held serve then broke and held again to be a much more respectable 3-5. Finally Djokovic closed out, 20 minutes after his first set point.
Thereafter the Hungarian proved a capable opponent, only broken once in the second set and forcing four break points early in the third. However, there was never any doubt who would win.
Notably, Djokovic is on the cusp of a record-equalling 20th Grand Slam title & the way he has played it seems there will be no stopping him today as well. Djokovic enetered the quarterfinals after wins over 17th seed Christian Garin, Denis Kudla, Kevin Anderson, and Jack Draper. He is only one Grand slam away from equalling Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal (20 majors each). The 34-year-old is also chasing his 3rd consecutive grand slam of 2021.
