Carlos Alcaraz vs Alexandre Muller

Top seed Carlos Alcaraz produced an entertaining mixture of power hitting, fearsome returning and delicate dropshots to beat France’s Alexandre Muller 6-4 7-6(2) 6-3 and reach the third round at Wimbledon on Friday.

But he made 41 unforced errors and did not have it all his own way against an obstinate opponent, who clearly enjoyed his first outing on the big stage and went toe-to-toe with the Spaniard for much of the match.

Novak Djokovic vs Stan Wawrinka

Stan Wawrinka said he stood no chance of beating Novak Djokovic in their Wimbledon third-round clash on Friday and the Swiss’s prediction proved spot on as he was outplayed on Centre Court.

Walking out little more than two hours before Wimbledon’s 11pm curfew, seven-time champion Djokovic was in a hurry as he rattled through two sets and though he met more resistance after that he sealed a 6-3 6-1 7-6(5) win just before closing time.

Andy Murray vs Stefanos Tsitsipas

Gritty Stefanos Tsitsipas fought off Andy Murray to silence a partisan Centre Court crowd with a superb five-set victory in a gripping Wimbledon second-round match on Friday.

The 24-year-old Greek trailed by two sets to one after twice Wimbledon champion Murray edged ahead in three tight sets on Thursday night before Wimbledon’s curfew halted play mid-battle.

But when the match resumed in sparkling sunshine on Friday, Tsitsipas was locked in from the first point and gradually wore down his 36-year-old opponent to carve out a 7-6(3) 6-7(2) 4-6 7-6(3) 6-4 victory.

Aryna Sabalenka vs Varvara Gracheva

Second seed Aryna Sabalenka of Belarus recovered from a poor first set to beat Varvara Gracheva 2-6 7-5 6-2 on Friday and reach the third round at Wimbledon.

A huge upset looked on the cards before Sabalenka found her rhythm midway through the second set, executing a cute drop shot to seal a hold to love. A huge roar after a hold at 5-5 powered her through to breaking Gracheva and serving out the set to level the match.

An early break in the decider swung the momentum in favour of Sabalenka, who had sharpened her returns and was finding the corners of the court with her powerful backhand.

The 2021 Wimbledon semi-finalist secured another break after a double fault from Gracheva and smashed an ace down the middle to complete her comeback and set up a third-round clash with Russian Anna Blinkova.

Iga Swiatek vs Petra Martic

Top seed Iga Swiatek kept her Wimbledon campaign on track with a 6-2 7-5 defeat of Croatia’s Petra Martic on Friday as she reached the fourth round without dropping a set.

The four-time Grand Slam champion was made to work harder than the scoreline suggests but was still relatively untroubled as she matched her best run at the championships. She will face Swiss 14th seed Belinda Bencic next.
