Carlos Alcaraz vs Jeremy Chardy
Top seed Carlos Alcaraz began his Wimbledon 2023 campaign by sending French veteran Jeremy Chardy into retirement. The Spaniard blasted the French off the court with a 6-0, 6-2, 7-5 drubbing.
In the match, which was played under the roof, the 20-year-old completely dismantled Chardy. The Frenchman wasn’t up to the mark in the first two sets, as the world no. 1 was firing down ferocious serves and rasping forehands with frightening power. Chardy upped his game in the third set and even broke Alcaraz to go 4-2 up. The top seed, however, showed why he’s considered a favourite for the Wimbledon title as he went on to win five of the next six games.
Andy Murray vs Ryan Peniston
Two-time champion Andy Murray will be in action at the centre court. He will be fcing his fellow compatriot Ryan Peniston in the first round.
Murray enters the tournament after a good preparation on grass. He has won back-to-back titles in challenger tournaments. He however enters the All England Club after bowing out from the first round at Queen’s Club Championships.
Women’s Singles
Elena Rybakina vs Shelby Rogers
Elena Rybakina looked to still be suffering from the illness that forced her out of the French Open last month when she was broken in the first game of the match. Rogers powered through the first set, but third seed Rybakina roared back in the second, showing the kind of strength and composure she used to claim her first Grand Slam title in London last year.
The 2022 champion never looked back, breaking again before closing out the match with a hold to love. She will face either Japanese lucky loser Nao Hibino or France’s Alize Cornet in the second round.
Ons Jabeur vs Magdalena Frech
Last year’s Wimbledon runner-up Ons Jabeur made a solid start to her bid to capture a maiden Grand Slam title as the world number six eased past unseeded Pole Magdalena Frech 6-3, 6-3 on Tuesday to reach the second round.
Tunisia’s Jabeur has struggled to build momentum during an injury-hit season and her preparation for the grasscourt major was far from ideal with early losses in Berlin and Eastbourne, but the sixth seed showed her calibre against Frech.
Aryna Sabalenka vs Panna Udvardy
No.2 seed Aryna Sabalenka cruised in her return to Wimbledon on Tuesday in a 6-3, 6-1 win over Panna Udvardy of Hungary.
The 2021 semifinalist needed just 61 minutes to book a spot in the second round, in one of just three women’s singles matches to be completed on Day 2 at the All England Club due to rain.
