Is Underarm legal and if so why did Murray use it? –
- Yes, the Underarm serve is perfectly legal and players like Nick Kyrgios have often used it, although majority of players try to avoid.
- Andy Murray had a sore abdominal muscle sustained two weeks ago that has prevented him from serving properly.
- In the fourth game of the third set, Murray tried being Nick Kyrgios as he successfully attempted the rarely used underarm serve.
- The crowd was also thrilled to see that as Murray entertained everyone at the Center Court.
- The underarm serve came as a surprise, but was well calculated as he knew where Duckworth was standing.
Not for the first time-
This was not the first time Murray attempted the controversial serve. It is the second time Murray had tried the controversial tactic – the previous occasion was against Spaniard Carlos Alcaraz at Indian Wells in October 2021.
Murray was almost punished for this surprise motion but Duckworth was unable to convert the point following a bad connection with his racket.
“Well, he changed his return position – that’s why I did it.
“He was struggling a little bit on the first-serve return, so he stepped probably two meters further back. As soon as I saw him step further back, I threw the underarm serve in.
“I personally have no issue with players using it. I never have.
“It’s a legitimate way of serving. I would never use an underarm serve if someone was standing on the baseline because I think it’s a stupid idea.
“Tactically it’s a smart play,” said the former two-time Wimbledon Champion in post-match.

Murray closes on high-
In the third set, with the light fading and more errors starting to come from his racket, Duckworth asked for the roof on Center Court to be closed. He got his wish, but only after losing the third set.
The fourth set was tightly contested until the ninth game when Murray forged ahead and broke after a double fault from his opponent.
Murray had no trouble serving out the win and sealed victory when Duckworth challenged a line call that turned out to be in.
Streak continues-
- Andy Murray has never lost in the first round of the Men’s singles and he continued the tradition with a win on Monday.
- Next up in his quest for a third title will be the regular sight of John Isner, whom he has never lost to in eight previous matches.
- Whether he would try another under-arm serve against the American giant remains to be seen.
