For over the past decade, the world of Tennis is being dominated by the three greatest players of this era – Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic. Touted as the ‘Big 3 in Tennis’, these modern-day legends have won a combined tally of 62 Grand Slam titles.

Each of the three players have made one of the Grand Slam tournaments their own. While Nadal is regarded as the ‘King of Clay’ for winning 14 French Open titles in his career, Djokovic has made the Australian Open his own with nine titles to his name. For Federer though, it is the Wimbledon. The Swiss legend is the most successful player to have ever graced the competition.

He made his debut in 1999 as an 18-year-old and since then featured in all the 22 editions of the tournament until last year and has won eight titles at the Grand Slam event. He won his first title in 2003 and went on to win five consecutive titles till 2007. He won his next three titles in 2009, 2012 and 2017.

Federer’s records at Wimbledon 

  • Roger Federer is the only player in the history of the championships to win more than 100 matches.
  • He is also only the second player to play more than 100 matches in the Grand Slam event. He has so far featured in 119 matches and registered victory in 105 games, losing just 14 matches.
  • He is only the second player in the men’s singles, after Bjorn Borg, to win the Wimbledon title without dropping a set.
  • The Swiss legend did it in 2017, by winning all his matches in straight sets, including the final, where he defeated Marin Cilic 6-3, 6-1, 6-4.
  • Federer has reached 12 finals at Wimbledon, and lost it four times, with three of those defeats coming against Novak Djokovic.

With such big feats, Federer has made Wimbledon his own. He is also dearly loved and adored by the Tennis loving English crowd. Every year fans would eagerly await for his match as he would always receive raucous reception whenever he arrives to play here. This year though, unfortunately he will be missed and the fans would really be disappointed. However, everyone can hope that the 41-year old makes a comeback soon.

When will Federer return? 

Federer’s last competitive match came in the Wimbledon last year, where he was ousted in the quarterfinal by Hubert Hurkacz. Federer who was suffering from a recurring knee issue since 2016, then decided to skip the 2021 US Open and underwent knee surgery. Out of action for more than a year now. Federer now hopes to return for the Laver Cup in late September and has plans to make a comeback in the ATP Tour in 2023.
