For the first time in four years, Djokovic’s ranking has dropped to third place or lower in the ATP Rankings. He started the year as the World No.1 but his grip on the top spot began to loose after he was excluded from the Australian Open due to his non-vaccination status. He also had to miss subsequent tournaments where he was not allowed. This reduced his ranking point considerably.
He was ousted in the quarterfinal of the French Open this year by Rafael Nadal and this made him to slip down to World No.3 in the rankings for the first time since October 2018.
However, despite the ranking, the six-time Wimbledon champion will enter SW19 as the top seed following the unavailability of World Mo.1 Daniil Medvedev and World No.2 Alexander Zverev. While Zverev is recovering from an ankle injury he sustained at the French Open, Medvedev is out following the ban on players from Russia and Belarus followwing Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. This will be the first -time Wimbledon is not going to see the participation of the World’s top two players. With this, Novak Djojovic is still the favourite to lift the title.
Wimbledon 2022 LIVE: Novak Djokovic eyeing his fourth straight Wimbledon title, Can the top seed win his maiden Grand Slam this year? Check Out- Djokovic has a terrific record on the Grass court Grand Slam with a 79-10 win-loss record in his career.
- He has won six titles at the Grass Court Grand Slam and is now eyeing to equal Pete Sampras’ record of seven Wimbledon titles.
- Djokovic has won the last three titles and if the reigning champion wins the title this year, it will be his fourth consecutive title at the major.
- If he achieves the feat, he will become only the fourth player to win four consecutive Wimbledon titles. The players to have done it previously includes Roger Federer and Bjorn Borg, who have won five consecutive titles each and Pete Sampras, who won four titles.
Djokovic has decided to skip the warmup events like Queens Club Championship or the Halle Open ahead of Wimbledon and he will straightaway play the Wimbledon without preparation on grass.
This could be his final Grand Slam event this year as his non-vaccination status might rule him out of US Open. With this, he will be much more determined to defend his title. He will face tough challenge from Rafael Nadal, but with him being the second seed, both these players will only meet in the final. Other than Nadal, there appears to be no other player at the moment who has the pedigree to stop Djokovic in the Grass court major.
