Simona Halep vs Amanda Anisimova

Simona Halep’s first appearance at Wimbledon since winning the title three years ago is going just as good as it did the last time. The 16th-seeded Romanian reached the semifinals and stretched her winning streak at the All England Club to 12 matches by beating Amanda Anisimova 6-2, 6-4 on Wednesday on Centre Court.

Halep missed the chance to defend her title at Wimbledon twice, first in 2020 when the tournament was cancelled because of the coronavirus pandemic and then again in 2021 when she had to sit out with a left calf injury.

The match against Anisimova appeared to be as straightforward as her first four victories at this year’s tournament — all came in straight sets. But the 20th-seeded American broke Halep when she was serving for the match at 5-2. Anisimova then had three more break points when Halep again served for the match at 5-4, but the Romanian won five straight points to finish the match.

Ajla Tomljanović vs Elena Rybakina

Elena Rybakina became the first player from Kazakhstan to reach a semifinal at the All England Club or any of the four Grand Slams after defeating Ajla Tomljanovic 4-6, 6-2. 6-3 here, on Wednesday.

The No.17 seed Rybakina delivered a dazzling serving performance against Tomljanovic in the Wimbledon quarterfinals, firing 15 aces en route to her victory in 1 hour and 51 minutes and setting up a semifinal clash against Simona Halep.

No woman has produced more aces at The Championships than Rybakina — she’s up to 43 now, 13 more than the next woman on the list — and her serve was a significant part of why she went through to play Simona Halep, the 2019 champion.

Taylor Fritz vs Rafael Nadal

Battling an injury scare, Rafael Nadal pulled off a memorable comeback win to seal his place in the Wimbledon 2022 semi-finals. The Spaniard defeated the spirited Taylor Fritz in a five-set thriller, having trailed 2-1 at one point. Nadal, who won the Australian Open and the French Open earlier this year, will face rival Nick Kyrgios in the semi-final later this week.

Struggling with an abdominal injury, Nadal appeared close to retiring mid-match on Centre Court but found the will to beat the 24-year-old Fritz 3-6 7-5 3-6 7-5 7-6 (10-4) in four hours and 20 minutes to set up a semi-final showdown against Australian maverick Nick Kyrgios.

Nick Kyrgios vs Cristian Garín

Nick Kyrgios reached the first Grand Slam semi-final of his chequered career with a comfortable 6-4 6-3 7-6(5) victory over Chile’s Cristian Garin at Wimbledon on Wednesday. The unseeded 27-year-old lost the opening nine points on Court One but ultimately had too much firepower for Garin who had hoped to become Chile’s first Wimbledon semi-finalist.

In surpassing his previous best Wimbledon run to the quarter-finals eight years ago, Kyrgios becomes the first Australian man to reach a Grand Slam semi-final for 17 years.  He managed to put all controversy to one side in a relatively low-volume display sprinkled occasionally with the instinctive shot-making that makes him such a draw.
