Wimbledon 2021: Roger Federer defeats Richard Gasquet to cruise into third round
Wimbledon 2021 – Roger Federer Wins: Federer is now the oldest man in 46 years to reach the Wimbledon third round. Australia’s Ken Rosewall was 40 when he made the third round at the All England Club in 1975.
The Swiss maintained his record of his past 10 meetings against the Spaniard, where he had not dropped a set against Gasquet, a former top-10 player now ranked 56th in the world.
Federer will take on Cameron Norrie of Britain for a place in the last 16.
“I was really happy with my performance,” Federer told the crowd. He turns 40 next month. Ken Rosewall was 40 when he made a run to the fourth round in 1975.
Federer improved to 19-2 against Gasquet and has won all five of their Grand Slam meetings in straight sets. In only his 10th match this year, Federer was delighted with the victory, but said he is not getting carried away with his promising start to this year’s championship.
“I don’t know,” Federer said when asked how far he can go. “It’s not the most important to feel your absolute best in the first and second round. You just don’t want to go out. … It was definitely, like you said, one of the highlights of the year so far.”
Wimbledon 2021: Roger Federer defeats Richard Gasquet to cruise into third round
Wimbledon 2021 – Roger Federer Wins: The 39-year-old faced a good battle against Gasquet in the opening set but he fought back well in the tie-breaking leading into the second and third set. The match finished 7-6 (7-1), 6-1 and 6-4 in favour of Federer.
Richard Gasquet played some of the finest backhands of The Championships on Centre Court but was still left with a familiar feeling as Roger Federer beat him in straight sets – again.
Federer’s victory, by 7-6(1), 6-1, 6-4, was his 20th against the hapless Frenchman, who last took a set off him 10 years ago, and often it seemed a case of ‘anything you can do…’
The Swiss maestro was break points down in the opening games of the first two sets, but overall his level was significantly higher than against Adrian Mannarino in his opening match.
