Wimbledon 2021: Federer closes gap on 21st Grand Slam, defeats Lorenzo Sonego to enter quarterfinals in rain-hit match- Tennis legend Roger Federer has ousted 23rd seed Lorenzo Sonego of Italy in his quest to enter the quarterfinals of the Wimbledon 2021. The match resumed after a short rain break once the Centre Court roof was closed during the opening set.
Federer won his 118th Wimbledon match and 18th quarterfinals of Wimbledon.

It was not easy, like Adrian Mannarino and Cameron Norrie, Lorenzo Sonego tested Roger Federer. Fortunately for the veteran champion, who will be 40 next month, unlike those two the Italian did not take him into a fourth set.
Indeed, after an hour-long first set the Swiss will have been relieved to wrap up the match in just over two hours. Key to this was the timing of the rain. That first set was finely poised, with Sonego facing a break-point at 5-5 when, 19 points into the service game, in which he had already saved three break points, the Heavens opened, the players went off and the Centre Court roof came on. When they resumed Federer broke, held, and took what proved an unshakeable grip on the tie.
Federer would probably have progressed anyway, the No.23 seed had been working much harder than the eight-time champion to hold his serve. It was the same in the second set, Federer breaking in the fifth game and maintaining that advantage. Thereafter the end was swift as Federer romped to 4-0 in the third before Sonego could gain a foothold.
The 20-time grand slam champion has earlier claimed easy wins over Cameron Norrie and Richard Gasquet after an early scare against Adrian Mannarino in the opening round. The ageless Federer has gone from strength to strength in a bid to go past Rafael Nadal and win his 21st Grand Slam to reinstate his position in the world of men’s singles tennis.
