Why Rohan Bopanna’s medal hopes are slim at the Paris Olympics 2024

Rohan Bopanna became the oldest player to achieve the world No. 1 ranking in doubles in January 2024.

Rohan Bopanna is India’s most decorated tennis player. The 42-year-old has reached the finals of the US Open twice. He truly left his mark when he won the Australian Open in 2024.

This victory has raised hopes of securing a medal in the Paris Olympics, where Rohan Bopanna will be playing in the men’s doubles, representing India alongside Sriram Balaji.

Olympic qualification

Bopanna secured the Olympic quota based on his sub-world No. 10 ranking by the cutoff date. Since he had to choose a partner from India, he selected Sriram Balaji.

Challenges ahead

There are concerns about the pairing of Sriram Balaji and Rohan Bopanna. In recent years, Bopanna has played with Australia’s Matthew Ebden, and together they won the Australian Open.

The experience and brilliance of Bopanna will undoubtedly be an asset in the Olympics, but his partner, Sriram Balaji, has yet to prove himself on the big stage. Sriram Balaji has never reached the knockout stage of any Grand Slam. Although he has medals in the South Asian Games, he still needs to prove himself on the ATP World Tour, having only won the ATP World Tour 250 Series, which not many seasoned players participate in.

Recent performance

Additionally, the pair of Bopanna and Balaji had a disappointing outing at the German Open, where they lost in the finals.
