Why is Magnus Carlsen suddenly out of the World Rapid and Blitz Chess Championship? FIDE releases statement

Magnus Carlsen’s disqualification from the World Rapid and Blitz Chess Championship 2024 over FIDE’s dress code violation is so bizzre.

In an unexpected turn of events at the World Rapid and Blitz Chess Championship 2024 defending champion Magnus Carlsen was disqualified for violating FIDE’s dress code. The incident happened on December 28, 2024, during the prestigious tournament held in Wall Street, New York. Carlsen is a multiple-time world champion and he faced disqualification after being fined $200 for wearing jeans, which are prohibited under the tournament’s regulations.

FIDE’s stand on dress code violation

the international chess governing body FIDE was prompt in releasing a statement explaining the situation and emphasising the importance of dress code regulations. They releads a statement saying, “The dress code regulations are drafted by members of the FIDE Athletes Commission, which is composed of professional players and experts. These rules have been in place for years and are well-known to all participants and are communicated to them ahead of each event. FIDE has also ensured that the players’ accommodation is within a short walking distance from the playing venue, making adherence to the rules more convenient,” said FIDE in a statement released on social media. The organisation underlined that players are accommodated within close proximity to the venue, facilitating easy compliance with the dress code.

Carlsen’s reaction and perspectives

In response to the disqualification, Carlsen expressed his discontent with the enforced dress code. He reportedly stated, “I said I’ll change tomorrow… but they said you have to change now, and it became a matter of principle for me so here we are! Honestly, I’m too old at this point to care too much. If this is what they want to do I‘ll probably set off to somewhere where the weather is a bit nicer.” Carlsen’s reaction shows his disagreement with the strict application of the rules.

Previous incidents and Impact on the Tournament

This incident is not the first of its kind. Earlier, Ian Nepomniachtchi faced a similar fine for a dress code violation but adhered to the request and continued in the event. FIDE’s consistent enforcement of these regulations has sparked a broader conversation about the necessity and impact of such policies on the sport. While FIDE maintains the rules are important for preserving chess’s professional image, Carlsen’s disqualification has undoubtedly stirred a debate over the balance between tradition and flexibility in sports regulations.
