Who is PR Sreejesh? India’s veteran field hockey goalkeeper doing last dance at the Paris Olympics

PR Sreejesh, who is currently being referred to with synonyms of ‘wall’ or ‘protector,‘ is leaving everyone in awe with his performances in the ongoing Paris Olympics. In the recently held quarterfinal game against Great Britain, this veteran goalkeeper not only saved India from losing the shootout but also, while India was playing with just 10 players, neutralized every chance Great Britain created. In the end, India won by a 4-2 margin.

This is not the first time he has set the stage on fire with his performances, his multiple tournament experiences and goalkeeping skills make him one of the standout players. After this impressive quarterfinal game, everyone wants to know more about him and his value in the men’s hockey team.

Who is PR Sreejesh?

With more than 300 international games, including three Olympics, many Commonwealth Games, and World Cups, this 36-year-old champion is currently playing in his fourth record Olympics. Last year, he announced his retirement, stating that Paris would be his final Olympics.

In the Tokyo 2020 Olympics, when India won the bronze medal, he was a key reason behind it. Similarly, in India’s Asian campaign where India won the gold medal, he was also a crucial factor. All the experience he is showcasing in the Paris Olympics is impressive. In 2021, he won the Khel Ratna Award, the highest sporting honor of India, and then the ‘World Athlete of the Year’ award. It will be interesting to see how this Kerala-born superstar performs in the upcoming semifinals at the Paris Olympics 2024.
