What is World Chess Championship tie break rules?

The World Chess Champions 2024 will have its next champion on December 12, but if the winner gets decided in Round 14, the game will move to a tiebreak.

Will Indian Grand Master D Gukesh create history in the 2024-25 World Chess Championship? The 18-year-old has the opportunity to become the youngest Grand Master to win the World Chess Championship if he triumphs in Round 14 of the ongoing tournament. However, he faces a formidable opponent in Ding Liren, who will also be vying for the prestigious title.

D Gukesh and Ding Liren are currently tied at 6-6 after Round 13. The winner will now be decided in the final Round 14. However, if the final round also ends in a draw, the World Chess Championship tie-break rules will come into effect to determine the champion. What are these rules, and how will they decide the winner? Let’s find out.

World Chess Championship tie break rules

If the winner is not decided after Round 14 of the World Chess Championship, a series of four games lasting 15 minutes each plus a 10-second increment every move will precede the quick tiebreak games, which are set for December 13.

The contest will switch to a two-game, 15-minute rapid match with a 10-second increment each move if there is no winner.

A blitz match consisting of two games timed at three minutes with a two-second increment after each move will be played if there is no winner.There will be a sudden death blitz of single games until a result is reached, even if no player gives up or outwits the opponent.

World Chess Championship Live Streaming

Game 14 between D. Gukesh and Ding Liren will begin at 2:30 PM IST and 5:00 PM local time in Singapore. The game will be broadcast live on the official YouTube channel of FIDE International Chess Federation. However, there will be no TV coverage of Game 14.
