Watch: Vinesh Phogat talks to her mother minutes after reaching historic Final at Paris Olympics

Phogat had participated in the Rio and Tokyo Olympics but failed to make it past the quarterfinal stage.

Vinesh Phogat had created history! The 29-year-old has become the first Indian female wrestler to reach the final at the Olympics. Although she beat Cuba’s Yusneylys Guzmán 5-0 in the semifinal, it was her quarterfinal bout against Yui Susaki that shocked the world.

Vinesh Phogat gets surprise video call

After reaching the final in the 50kg freestyle category, the pugilist received a wonderful surprise. Fresh off the mat, she was greeted by her family. Having gone through a lifetime of hardship in the last year, you could see what it meant to her family.

No one had given the wrestler a chance when she decided to move from the 53kg to 50kg category, and with just a few months of preparation, she’s thought of as a medal contender. To make matters worse, she drew one of the greatest female wrestlers of all time. But she’s defied all odds, and a big reason for her success, as it is for most athletes, is her family.
