WATCH Taking cue from Neeraj Chopra, juniors take Indian javelin to new heights

Javelin throw in India is attaining great height after Neeeraj Chopra's exploits, as the juniors broke a few records at the National Junior Athletics Championships recently.

The 38th National Junior Athletics Championships witnessed a few javelin records being broken on the penultimate day of the tournament on Thursday, at the Nehru Stadium in Coimbatore. In the U-14 girls category, Haryana’s Minakshi bettered the national mark by almost 10m to win the gold. Himanshi attained a distance of 44.05m, bettering the previous distance of 34.46m set by Tejaswani Dhal in February this year.

As per the Athletics Federation of India, in the boys U-14 category, Bihar’s Kishu Singh took the top prize home with a massive throw of 64.56m. He bettered the previous mark of 57.08m, which stood in the name of Dhairya Alpenshbhai.

But the highlight of the day was the U-16 boy’s javelin event, where the national mark was bettered twice on the same day. First, it was Himanshu who cleared a distance of 68.10m, and then Bihar’s Virehttps://twitter.com/MichaelMMG71/status/1722876706325754341ndra Yadav attained a distance of 69.45m.

There is hardly any doubt that India’s success in the javelin throw could be attributed to Neeraj Chopra and his gold medal at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics. At the Asian Games as well, where Neeraj Chopra won the gold medal, compatriot Kishore Jena won the silver, registering his personal best, clearing a distance of 87m. As far as the women’s javelin is concerned, Annu Rani had bagged a gold medal at the Asian Games as well.
