Rafael Nadal has expressed his support for women’s equality in sports. The tennis legend expressed his views on the issue, using the example of Serena Williams to illustrate why women should have the same opportunities as men in the sport.
During this period of absence from competitive tennis, Nadal has shared some insightful reflections. He touched upon topics such as his family, life post-tennis retirement, and drew an intriguing parallel with Serena Williams. In a discussion about equal pay in tennis, Nadal referenced Williams, emphasizing the importance of providing women with the same opportunities as men.
“The prize money in tennis are practically the same. Because there was the possibility that women’s tennis would be liked by the world. Women’s tennis is liked by the world, they earn a lot of money.“
Nadal highlighted the similarity in prize money between men’s and women’s tennis, attributing it to the global popularity of women’s tennis. He stressed that female champions attract crowds to stadiums and generate substantial revenue.
Nadal expressed his belief that if women outperform men in terms of generating revenue, they should earn more. He clarified that his aspiration is not to earn more than Serena Williams solely because he is Rafael Nadal, but rather to advocate for gender pay equality based on meritocracy and revenue generation.
If women world champions are popular, they fill the stadiums. The more they win, the better, I don’t want to earn more than Serena Williams because I’m Rafa Nadal. I want women to earn more than men if they generate more than men,” explained Rafa.
Rafael Nadal has made it known that he will not be participating in the ATP tournament in Doha, which was slated for the upcoming days. Consequently, his return to the court will be delayed, with his sights set on making a comeback at the ATP Masters 1000 in Indian Wells, slated for early March, as confirmed by recent rumors.
