In an unusual turn of events at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games, Bangladesh’s flag was carried by a volunteer during the Closing Ceremony. With all Bangladeshi athletes having returned home after their events, a dedicated volunteer stepped in to ensure that the nation was still represented at the grand finale. This unexpected moment highlighted the spirit of the Olympics, where even in the absence of athletes, the pride of a nation is upheld.
Final farewell to Paris Olympics 2024
The Closing Ceremony, hosted at the iconic Stade de France, marked the end of 16 days filled with intense competition and unforgettable moments.
Titled “Records,” the ceremony was directed by Thomas Jolly, who also helmed the impressive Opening Ceremony on the Seine. Over 70,000 spectators filled the stadium to witness a spectacular show featuring 270 artists and performers, bringing the Paris Games to a fitting conclusion.
Glimpse into LA28 Olympic Games
As part of the Closing Ceremony, the Olympic flag was officially handed over to Los Angeles, the host city for the 2028 Games. The LA28 handover was celebrated with an all-star musical lineup, including performances by Grammy and Academy Award-winning artists such as Billie Eilish, Red Hot Chili Peppers, and Snoop Dogg.
Southern California’s own music icon, Snoop Dogg, and Grammy, Academy, and Emmy Award-winning artist H.E.R. delivered a powerful rendition of the U.S. national anthem live in Paris, offering a tantalising preview of what to expect in 2028.
LA28 Chairperson Casey Wasserman expressed excitement about the upcoming Games, stating, “This is the biggest moment in LA28 history to date, as the Olympic flag passes from Paris to LA. We are thrilled to feature the very best of LA with local artists and are grateful to Billie, H.E.R., the Chili Peppers, and Snoop for their collaboration on what will be an incredible show to a global audience that will give fans a taste of what’s to come in 2028.”
Bangladesh’s Political Turmoil casts shadow
Amid the celebratory atmosphere of the Olympics, Bangladesh is facing significant political unrest. Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina fled the country on August 5, 2024, following weeks of intense protests that resulted in numerous fatalities. Her departure has left Bangladesh in a state of uncertainty, with the military temporarily stepping in to fill the power vacuum.
This political turmoil in Bangladesh has overshadowed the Olympic spirit, as the nation grapples with its future. Despite these challenges, the presence of the Bangladeshi flag at the Closing Ceremony, albeit carried by a volunteer, served as a symbol of resilience and hope for the country during these turbulent times.
