Vinesh Phogat’s family to convince wrestler to take back retirement, prepare for 2028 LA Olympics

Vinesh Phogat announced her decision to retire after her exit from the Paris Olympics owing to a disqualification for failing to keep her weight below 50kgs

Indian wrestler Vinesh Phogat announced her decision to retire following her heartbreaking exit from the Paris Olympics. Her uncle and coach Mahavir Phogat, however, wants Vinesh to take back her retirement and start preparing for the next Olympics. In what was a cruel twist of fate, Vinesh was disqualified from her gold medal match, shattering her dreams.

‘We will convince Vinesh Phogat’

We will explain to her that she still has to play more and she should change her decision of retirement. We will tell her not to lose heart and start preparing for the 2028 Olympics from now on. I, Bajrang Punia and all of us will together explain to her,” Mahavir Phogat told Aaj Tak.

On Thursday morning, Vinesh Phogat took to social media to announce her decision. In an emotional note, the wrestler noted that she had lost the match againt wrestling and that she had no strength to continue any further.

Vinesh had made it to the final of the women’s 50 kg bout after much difficulty. She beat the Tokyo 2020 gold medalist in the first bout 3-2, that only paved the way for her to go further in the competition.

As per the UWW rules, a player failing to get their weight under check, won’t win a medal. So that could well mean, that despite being assured of a silver, Vinesh Phogat will not take a medal back home from Paris Olympics.
