Vinesh Phogat to be represented by Harish Salve at CAS hearing on Paris Olympics disqualification

The Court of Arbitration for Sports (CAS) will hear Vinesh Phogat's appeal against her disqualification from the Paris Olympics at 12.30 PM IST

Indian wrestler Vinesh Phogat will be represented by former Solicitor General and Kings Counsel Harish Salve in the Court of Arbitration for Sports (CAS) for her appeal. Phogat was disqualified from the gold medal bout of the 50kgs event of the Paris Olympics for being overweight. Following this heartbreak, the Indian camp decided to appeal against the decision which was accepted by the CAS and the hearing will take place on Friday.

As per news agency ANI, Harish Salve confirmed that he will be representing Vinesh Phogat in the CAS hearing. The hearing is set to take place at 12.30 PM IST.

Vinesh had appealed that she be allowed to participate in the gold medal match, but given that Hildebrandt had already won, that wasn’t accepted. However, her second appeal, where she requested to be awarded as a joint-silver medalist in the women’s 50kg weight category, might be granted.

Vinesh Phogat’s journey in Paris Olympics

Vinesh had started her Paris Olympics journey by beating 4-time World Champions and Tokyo Olympics gold medalist Yui Susaki in the round of 16. The Japanese pugilist was on an 82-match win streak and is widely regarded as one of the greatest wrestlers of all time.

She followed her miracle victory over Susaki by beating Ukaraine’s Oksana Livach in the quarterfinal and then easily beating Guzmán 5-0 in the semifinal. Vinesh had already become the first Indian female wrestler to reach a final at the Olympics, and a medal was confirmed.

However, the next day, she was disqualified after failing to keep her weight under check, shattering her medal hopes.
