India’s star wrestler Vinesh Phogat on Monday qualified for Asian Olympic qualifiers in the 50kg category. However, she lost out in the 53kg category in the Women’s selection trials for Paris Olympics 2024 at SAI Academy in Patiala.
Phogat, who earlier in the day had delayed the trials demanding a written assurance from authorities that she would allowed to compete in both 50 and 53kg weight, lost 10-0 to wrestler Anju in the semi-finals of the 53kg category.
Vinesh Phogat, however, shook off that defeat with a dominating performance in the final of the 50kg category. Phogat took on Shivani Pawar in the final of the 50kg category. Pawar proved no match for the wrestler as Phogat easily overcame her opponent’s challenge to win by 11-6 in the 50kg final. With the victory, she ensured that she will represent India in the Asian Olympic qualifiers.
Notably, Vinesh showed up at the SAI center to compete in the 50kg trials after leading a protracted protest against BJP MP and former WFI President Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh, accusing him of sexual harassment.
