Vinesh Phogat in Trouble! NADA issues notice for whereabouts failure

Bajrang Punia and Vinesh Phogat are undergoing training in Kyrgyzstan ahead of Asian Games 2023

Vinesh Phogat, a two-time medalist wrestler at the World Championships, has received a notice from the National Anti-Doping Agency (NADA) for failing to provide her whereabouts.

On June 27, a dope control officer (DCO) went to the address in Sonipat’s Partap Colony. Vinesh could not be reached by phone and was nowhere to be found. The DCO called her husband Somvir Rathee, but neither of them responded after calling for more than 40 minutes.

Vinesh Phogat has been asked to answer to her “failure to comply with the whereabouts requirements of the ADR” by NADA project officer Ankush Gupta.

Every three months, athletes who are a part of the registered testing pool (RTP) must update their location data using the Anti-Doping Administration Management System (ADAMS). Their name, address, phone number, work schedule, training locations, and schedule must all be listed. Since December 2022, Vinesh has been a part of the RTP.

Vinesh Phogat has 14 days

In order to react to this notice, Vinesh Phogat has 14 days. Although this is the first time in a year that she has experienced a whereabouts failure, Vinesh shouldn’t be too concerned. Anti-doping rule violations that result in three whereabouts failures during a 12-month period are punishable by a two-year penalty.

Vinesh Phogat is, incidentally, the second Indian wrestler to receive this notification. Pooja Dhanda, who won the bronze medal at the World Championships, has experienced three whereabouts failures over the past 12 months. In July, October, and December of 2022, Dhanda recorded consecutive whereabouts failures.

Asian Games 2023 Trials on July 22 and 23

The trials for the Asian Games 2023 will take place in New Delhi on July 22 and 23, according to the ad hoc body established to oversee the Indian Wrestling Federation. For the women’s and Greco-Roman teams, trials will be placed on the first day.

The following day will see the freestyle trials. On August 10 and 11, there will be a World Championships trial. The commission has not yet heard from the protesting wrestlers regarding their participation in the Asian Games trials.

Sakshi Malik and Satywart Kadian are undergoing training in the USA, while Bajrang Punia and Vinesh Phogat are in Kyrgyzstan.
