India’s dream of getting a gold today has been squashed. Indian wrestler Vinesh Phogat has been disqualified from the finals of the Paris Olympics. It is with regret that the Indian contingent shares news of the disqualification of Vinesh Phogat from the Women’s Wrestling 50kg class. Despite the best efforts by the team through the night, she weighed in a few grams over 50kg this morning. No further comments will be made by the contingent at this time. The Indian team requests you respect Vinesh’s privacy. It would like to focus on the competitions on hand: Indian Olympic Association,” the IOA said in a statement.

Vinesh Phogat’s dream of achieving a gold medal at the Paris Olympics ends in a heartbreak. Reports indicate that Vinesh was a few grammes overweight. But the rules are extremely strict in terms of a wrestler being overweight. And thus as a result she has been disqualified.

Reports indicate that Vinesh Phogat was roughly 2 kgs overweight the night before. She tried cutting down her weight throughout the night but missed the cut off during the weigh-in by a whisker.
