Indian wrestler Vinesh Phogat defeated Japan’s Yui Susaki in the first round of women’s 50kg wrestling event at the Paris Olympics. The grappler defeated Tokyo Olympics gold medallist and world champion Yui Susaki of Japan in her first match by 3-2. Vinesh will face eighth seed Oksana Livach of Ukraine in the quarterfinals.

Vinesh Phogat wins 1st round at Paris Olympics

Vinesh Phogat stunned the current world champion with a stunning move in the final seconds of the bout to gain a massive victory.

Despite her tumultuous build-up to the event, Vinesh remains one of India’s most accomplished female wrestlers, boasting two World Championships, three Commonwealth Games (CWG) medals, and eight Asian Championships medals.

However, her previous two Olympic campaigns ended in heartbreak. In Rio 2016, she returned with a broken leg, and in Tokyo 2021, she faced a crushing defeat ‘by fall’ in the quarter-finals.
