Indian wrestler Vinesh Phogat created history of sorts on Tuesday, as she entered the final of the women’s 50 kg event after beating Cuban pugilist Y Guzman, 5-0. This will be the first time any Indian woman has entered the final of a wrestling event at any Olympics, and only third overall after Sushil Kumar in London 2012, and Ravi Dahiya in Tokyo 2020.
Vinesh Phogat Enters Final
Earlier in the day, Vinesh threw a major surprise when she beat Japan’s champion Yui Sasuki in the first round, 3-2. What was even more exceptional was the fact that she got the better of an opponent, who had never lost her bout in her international career, and was the defending Tokyo 2020 champ.
In the next bout, in the quarters, she went past Ukraine’s O Livach 7-5. Even though the scoreline doesn’t suggest so, but this was a one-sided bout, totally dominated by Vinesh.
Wrestler Cries Uncontrollably
Such is the magnitude of her win, that even the wrestler couldn’t hold back her tears after making it to the final. If that is not enough, even her personal coach Woller Akos couldn’t hold back tears, and sobbed with her ward. Paris Olympics 2024 will be her first ever medal at Games, as she missed out one in Rio 2016, and Tokyo 2020.
